Sometimes, it has been observed that those who get managerial posts for the first time find it hard to get a grip or control over their staff members. Recently, a friend who works in a bank spoke about their new manager, who is younger than a lot of employees and perhaps inexperienced in this role, is having a tough time controlling his staff and their functions. The veteran employees in the bank seem to have an upper hand on the manager and he, out of respect, gives in. The result is not a very inspiring picture; the whole department is like a ship with no captain, absolute commotion and each employee passing the buck on someone else. It sounded a sorry state of affair for this anger, however, he is not alone in such a situation. Managers sometimes face the problem of being controlled rather than the other way round. Under such a circumstance, it is important that we make ourselves clear in the following way:1. First impressions indeed have lasting effects. Come across as a powerful communicator in your first speech to your staff. Be crisp, well-prepared, and explain to them well what you shall be focusing on as manager.2. Always let your employees earn your respect. In other words, do not allow your pre-conceived notions to rule your judgment. Old or new employee, woman or man employee, senior or junior employee, social or reticent employee and so on should all be given equal chance to win your confidence, respect and trust through their work. It is not only important to have this approach but to make it very clear to the staf.... More
